Winter Traditions in Turkey

Saint Nicholas, or Father Christmas as you may know him, is the person that they celebrate in Turkey on the 6th December. He was born in Patara, a small town in Turkey. People remember him because of his generosity and people say that he always had his pockets filled with sweets to give to children in the street. It is for this reason that he is still celebrated today.

Noeliniz Ve Yeni Yillliniz Kutlu Olsun! That is how you say 'Merry Christmas!' in Turkish! However, Christmas is very different in Turkey compared to Christmas in Spain or the United Kingdom. There are lots of Christmas trees and you can hear Christmas carols everywhere that you go but nobody celebrates or exchanges gifts.

In Turkey, the 31st of December is the most important day. Traditional food such as turkey filled with chestnuts is served and children receive small presents.
